Asansol Girls' College, a premier institution of this coalfield and industrial region of West Bengal came into existence in 1950 mainly as a result of untiring efforts of Dr. Lalit Mohan Sen, the then CSO, Mines Board of Health and his worthy consort Smt. Kamala Sen. From the humble beginning in the premises of the Manimala Girls' High School the college soon blossomed into maturity and was shifted to its new building in 1962. During the difficult years of its adolescence, the college was fortunate to have Dr. Anjali Roy as its principal. She was a dedicated educationist, who with the help of a team of devoted colleagues nurtured the college as one of the most prestigious institutions under the Kazi Nazrul University. In 1969 a Morning Section was opened to meet the increasing demand for higher education of girls of this area.

Today it has become a vibrant centre of learning with a student strength of more than two thousand. With its devoted academicians and dedicated human resource the institute is supplying on a steady stream of dynamic girl students for a pretty long time and has received the Heritage grant of the University Grants Commission in the year 2001.
